Huron Diploma Programme Verification Visit Update - GREAT NEWS!

Dear IB Faculty, IB Community Advisory Members, and Interested Others,

I am writing to share an important and exciting milestone has passed in connection to the development of the most robust International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) in the state of Michigan at Huron High School.

This past week, Huron teachers, IB facilitators, parents, and administrators participated in what is called the Diploma Programme "verification visit."  The purpose of the visit was for the IB Organization to assess Huron's readiness to offer the DP beginning the fall of 2017 including all of the following:
In preparation for the visit, Eric Wynn, the DP facilitator, and DP faculty did significant and substantial work to develop DP courses and teaching practices over the last two years.  Their readiness for the verification visit was apparent to say the least.

The visit lasted two days, and involved tours of the facilities, conversations with parents and students, and meetings with over 30 of our faculty, counselors, and administrators. The visiting team also met with Superintendent Dr. Swift and Board President Mexicotte.

At the end of the verification visit, the visiting team sat with administrators and IB Facilitators to share their thoughts in connection to the IB Programme Standards and Practices.

The visiting team shared:
- AAPS has embarked on a special journey of offering an inclusive IB pathway containing a robust set of DP offerings - there is something (hopefully) for every student including six world languages (which neither visitor had seen previously)
- The Huron faculty was well informed and highly professional
- Huron teachers are clearly engaged and understand the hard work necessary to develop and implement an IB program with the kind of breadth and depth AAPS is aiming for in our DP (and in our PreK - 12th grade IB pathway)
- They were impressed with the supports that exist within the school and district - including the development and implementation of the collaboration hour at Huron this year
- They made positive comments about Huron counselors and the structure of special education at Huron
- They made positive comments about Eric Wynn's work and preparation with teachers as well as in preparing current 10th grade students during one on one planning meetings.

Upshot: We anticipate hearing feedback about Huron's application to offer the DP for the fall of 2017 in the next 14 weeks. Thanks to the exceptional work of our teachers and administrators, we feel positive about the potential feedback and outcome.

If we are successful and authorized to offer the DP for the fall of 2017, we will announce Huron as an IB World School before the end of the 2016-17 school year.

As a reminder, the verification visits for the Primary Years Programme at Mitchell and Middle Years Programme at Scarlett/Huron are anticipated in the spring of 2017.

If you have questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to your facilitators, school administrators, or me.  All contact information can be found on school websites and/or the Ann Arbor IB website.  And thank you again to everyone who has contributed to and supported this moment.
