One Year Diploma Programme Classes Available to Class of 2018 at Huron

Dear Huron Class of 2018 Families,

Over the past few months, some families have inquired as to whether or not current juniors (class of 2018) would be able to enroll in our new IB Diploma Programme (DP) courses for the 2017-18 school year.  This has come up more often since Huron was named an IB  World School in December.

After some discussion and analysis by the Huron leadership as to whether or not the classes could accommodate the potential interest from the class of 2018, it has been decided to allow current junior students to take advantage of some DP courses.  After exploring a number of scenarios, the Huron leadership team has determined that although current juniors cannot become full DP students (which is a two-year high school experience), there are a number of one-year DP classes in which they are eligible for enrollment.

What are those classes?
  • Global Politics SL (IB) - Global Politics SL (IB) allows students to explore basic fundamental political concepts. It is designed for students to develop an understanding of the local, national, international, and global dimensions of political activity and processes, as well to explore political issues affecting their own lives. The course is intended for 11th and 12th grade students, and will serve as a component of the IB Diploma Program. This course satisfies the Individuals and Societies requirement for Full IB Diploma students.
  • Business and Management SL (IB) -Business and Management SL (IB) is intended to help students develop their understanding of the fundamental concepts of Business and management. The course will cover all of the business and management related standards adopted by the State of Michigan. This course is intended for 11th and 12th grade students. The performance expectations of the course will focus on business and management practices such as; employing information management techniques and strategies to assist in decision-making, planning and time management, managing customer relationships, understanding day-to-day business activities, risk management strategies, human resources, and operational and functional aspects of management. This course satisfies the Individuals and Societies requirement for Full IB Diploma students.

  • Psychology SL (IB)- The Psychology SL (IB) course aims are to teach the students major principles in the field of Psychology, understand research methods, and to educate students about human behavior and cognition. The course content will focus on biological, cognitive and sociocultural levels of analysis. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct an experiment and explore one of the following research topics in depth: abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, health psychology, psychology of human relationships, sports psychology. The goal of the course is to teach students how to be critical thinkers, analyze research, explore research methods and to understand the relationship between biopsychosocial events and our behaviors and mental processes. This course satisfies the Individuals and Societies requirement for Full IB Diploma students.
  • Environmental Systems and Societies SL IB- Environmental Systems and Societies SL (IB) is an interdisciplinary course that studies the interaction of humans and the environment. The students will gain the knowledge and understanding of environmental systems and issues on a variety of levels. Environmental issues will be studied on personal, local and global levels, this will help students develop an awareness of environmental issues, make future environmental decisions and be motivated to be stewards for the environment. This course satisfies the Sciences requirement or the Individuals and Societies requirement for Full IB Diploma students.

Why do this?
These are unique classes that are highly regarded by universities and may result in college credit and placement. These classes are only offered at Huron, and do not have an equivalent at any other Ann Arbor high schools.

So seniors next year can take Diploma Programme classes?
Yes….at least some of them.  If the courses listed above are interesting to your student and fit into your senior year plan, they can register for them in the PowerSchool portal in March.

Why didn't you announce this earlier?
Our primary work in developing the DP at Huron is to be ready next fall for the current 10th grade class (class of 2019).  As we received early notice that we've been named a DP World School, it has allowed us consider the possibility of offering one-year DP classes to the class of 2018. It simply was not possible to consider this before we knew we were authorized.

How do I find out more about these courses and the International Baccalaureate?

And on the Ann Arbor IB website:

We are excited that we have determined a way to make these courses available to current juniors, and hope students will be excited about the opportunity to take them. Questions about these courses can be directed to our IB Diploma Coordinator, Eric Wynn, at
